Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling Trends

By Cristina - Studio Lily Design

Over the last year we have seen a surge of interest in homeowners wanting to remodel or upgrade their homes. In particular are their kitchen and bathrooms! Undoubtedly two of the most important rooms of the home that fuels and relaxes us.

As an interior designer, some of the most frequently asked questions I get are based around design trends. And recently they are specifically how others are remodeling their kitchens and bathrooms.

This increase in popularity to remodel these rooms has inspired this blog post! I have collated the Top 3 remodeling trends for both kitchens and bathrooms to help motivate some home remodeling ideas… Let’s take a look!

Kitchen Remodeling Trends

In 2020 we saw a huge surge of interest in navy blue painted kitchen cabinets and copper accents. But what are we seeing popularity in this year?

Dark Surfaces

While there was a time for sleek all-white kitchen designs, trends are moving far away from this in the opposite direction. Dark materials are on the horizon for kitchen remodeling projects! Think light oak or dark kitchen cabinets with black marble countertops and statement hardware.

Advanced Faucet Technology

We are also seeing a massive interest from clients for more advanced kitchen faucets since the pandemic of 2020. Many brands are bringing out new lines of faucets that include instant hot water and touchless technology. With a wave of your hand you can turn the water on… Perfect for Sunday afternoons spent baking!

In general, statement faucets will become a huge aspect of new kitchen designs this year.

Kitchen-Dining Islands

Designing for more compact and smaller spaces is becoming particularly important for those high-rise dwellers. Incorporating a dining surface or lower dining table attached to the main kitchen island will be a big kitchen remodeling trend for 2021.

If there is additional space in the home, that room can be used for more formal dining. But due to the multi-functional needs of kitchen design, combining cooking and dining together will be a big advantage for many.

Bathroom Remodeling Trends

Last year we saw a huge increase in geometric tile designs which subsequently influenced the bathroom design scene quite heavily. This year is slightly different…

Fluted Finishes

Ribbed and fluted surfaces will become more prominent among the bathroom trends this year. They add a contemporary twist to any bathroom.

This remodeling trend will be huge for bathroom vanity units and cabinets to add subtle interest. The fluted detail creates texture to an otherwise flat surface.

Dark Tones

Many homeowners naturally gravitate to sleek and clean white bathrooms. While this may provide a good foundation for a bathroom, it certainly won’t create that “wow-factor” anymore.

Flip this over – we are seeing some beautiful natural finishes being used in bathrooms of late and the finished result is breathtaking. This involves using only one shade or tones of color through the room to keep it consistent and minimal. It may feel risky to only use one material or shade but the result can be stunning. Add pops of color through accessories.

Simple – Barely-There Look

The final bathroom remodeling trend we’re going to see more of this year is the “barely-there” look. Simplicity at its very best.

These bathrooms include natural or textured finishes, such as textured plaster walls and fluted vanity units that are also wall hung so they appear like they’re floating. This helps to give the illusion of more space and helps to create a relaxing and calm atmosphere that I am sure we could all do with!

That concludes the quick round up of kitchen and bathroom remodeling trends for 2021! We are likely to see many of the trends from last year continue through this year too, however there are some interesting design advances coming into play as well.

Do you agree with these kitchen and bathroom remodeling trends? Or do you think we’ll see more of something else? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject in the comments below!
